Chapter Twenty

They stood for a second, neither one speaking. Shocked to see him, Jill bit her lip, a million thoughts flooding her mind. What was he doing here? Their last encounter had been an ugly one, and she wondered if his opinion of her had changed.

She heard a throat clear behind her and remembered she wasn’t alone. Turning, she saw Rem and Daniels standing behind her. “God. Sorry. Uhm, Rem, Daniels this is Officer Thomas Fitzpatrick from the Seattle P.D.”

Rem and Daniels walked over and met Fitzpatrick with a handshake.

“Fitz, this is Detectives Gordon Daniels and Aaron Remalla,” she said, noticing she was wringing her hands, and she stopped.

“I’m Detective Fitzpatrick now. They promoted me not long after you left,” said Fitz.

“That’s great,” said Jill. “Congratulations.”

“What brings you to our neck of the woods?” asked Daniels.

“I heard about your troubles. Thought I’d check in and see how it was going. I talked to Merchant. He said Jacobs was down here helping.” He put a hand on his leather belt. “I heard about the latest victim this morning. Looks like you’re having as much difficulty as we did.” He made eye contact with Jill.

“It hasn’t been easy, that’s for sure. But Jacobs has been a huge help,” said Remalla. “We’re lucky to have her.”

His face flattened. “Really? That’s interesting.”

Jill’s heart thudded. “Fitz…”

“Because there’s a few cops back in Seattle who might disagree.” His quiet demeanor became more rigid.

Jill held her breath. “Why don’t we go talk. There’s a room off the hall.”

Fitz hesitated, but then held out a hand. “Sure. Why not? Let’s talk.”

Jacobs could feel the curious stares of Rem and Daniels, but she wouldn’t look at them. As she started to leave, Rem took her elbow. “You all right with this guy?” he asked.

She nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

Fitz watched as she passed him, and he followed her into a small interview room down the hall. He closed the door behind them.

“Looks like you got yourself a nice setup here,” he said. “Do they know what happened in Seattle?” It was obvious his anger had not faded.

She tried to stay calm. “They know my story, yes. It’s why I’m here.”

He sat, leaning back in his seat. “I mean, do they know all of your story? Not just the ones you or Merchant told them.”

Jill took a breath and her heart hammered. “They know enough.”

He chuckled. “I figured.”

“Why are you here? The last time we spoke, you said you hated me. I can tell this isn’t a friendly visit.”

He sat up and put his hands on the desk. “I may have been a little harsh the last time we spoke. I’ll be the first to admit I can be a little too black and white. Henderson always said that was one of my worst traits.”

At the mention of Henderson, the painful weight of the memories almost broke her. She wasn’t sure how much more her shoulders could carry. “Yeah, well. He was always honest.”

“To a fault. It’s why I Ioved the guy.
